The translation mode allowsyou to your WesternDigital drive with an older S#system BIOSand/or operating systemswhich only support MFM drives with 17 sectorsper track. The non-translation mode accommodates an RLL drivewith 27 sectors per track. When pins 1 and 2 are shorted together, thetranslate option isdisabled. If pin 1 is open, the translateoption is enabled, and thedrive can be used with any BIOS that has adrive table listing lessthan total sectors than your Western Digitaldrive (less than 42,228sectors for the two-head drive assembly; and84,456 for the four-headdrive assembly). For example, a WesternDigital drive in translationmode may replace a drive which has 615cylinders, four heads and 17sectors.Dual Drive Operation--------------------If you are installing two physical drives inyour XT system, thefirst drive must be selected at port address 320H.Its BIOS residesat address C800H. Select the second drive atport address 324H. ItsBIOS resides at CA00H. Both drives musttherefore have seperatecables connectinmg them to the motherboard. You will require WesternDigital's XT140 adapter card which has two40-pin connectors.
